Gun owners face media lynching regardless of guilt or innocence

Gun owners face media lynching regardless of guilt or innocence

Once again the liberal press and gun control zealots are going out of their way to make criminals look like saints and victims look like monsters.

This can be seen in the case of George Zimmerman who defended himself from a savage beating at the hands of Trayvon Martin.  The police on the scene, who witnessed first hand Zimmerman’s injuries, declared that he had acted in self defense and released him.  But when the press heard that a man named George Zimmerman had shot a black “kid” named Trayvon, they swooped in like media Valkyrie in order to paint this as a hate crime.

I can all but guarantee you that if George Zimmerman used his mothers maiden name and went by Jorge Guiterrez (not sure of his mom’s Peruvian maiden name so just used that as an example) then this case would never have seen the light of day.  Plus, when it was discovered that George was a registered Democrat the Liberal Press would have fled the story in a heart beat.

Because the truth doesn’t fit into their narrative…they hear that a guy named Zimmerman shot an unarmed black “kid” and all of a sudden they paint Zimmerman as a white, extreme conservative, tea partier who shot Martin based solely on race.  Zimmerman never had a chance.  They media had tried and convicted him on his name and because doing so was good for ratings they justified it to themselves.

NBC went so far as to doctor recordings in order to make it appear that Zimmerman was racist. The liberal media doesn’t let a little thing like truth get in the way of a good sensationalized story after all.

Then there are the photos of the Zimmerman and Martin.  For the first few weeks of the story the only picture you saw of Zimmerman was his mug shot, which as usual for mug shots, did not paint him in a good light.  On the other hand, the media had no qualms showing pictures of Martin as a happy bubbly child.  Of course, the pictures they used were taken 5 years prior when Martin was just a boy…not the 6″+ thug life living, tatooed gansta that he presented himself to the world as.

The reason I bring up the Zimmerman case is because I have just read of another story in which the media is spinning a pair of burglars into angelic kids fooling around and a man defending his home as a gun toting maniac gunning them down.

In Little Falls, Minnesota on Thanksgiving, a 17 and 18 year old pair of cousins break into the house of a senior citizen with the intention of robbing him.  Unfortunately for them, homeowner Byron Smith (who had suffered previous break-ins for a loss of over $10,000) was home and armed.

Mr. Smith ended the lives of both of these criminals who had broken into his house.

Normally, I would celebrate this as a moment of real life defense.  Unfortunately Mr. Smith seemed to have gone overboard with the defense of his home and after shooting the criminals, “more times than he needed to” he claims, shot the 18 year old in the head to end the suffering.

The story takes an even odder twist after that.  Smith wraps the bodies in tarps and puts them in his basement and doesn’t call the police until the following day, explaining that he didn’t want to bother anyone on Thanksgiving.  While thoughtful, probably not the best way to go legally.  Of course, he could have been in a state of shock; who knows how people will react in both those high stress moments and the subsequent aftermath?

Now, what do I see when I see this story online?  Pictures of the two burglars in the best photos that can be found of them and Mr. Smith’s mug shot which is not flattering in the least.  From the visual alone we are being  bombarded with bias.  Instead of seeing two criminals who broke into an old mans house with a lead pipe you see two kids with bright smiles who are said to be popular in school.  As if popularity makes you incapable of crime.

Like I said, I am not sure where I fall on this story.  Shooting two home invaders is no doubt an intense situation and who can really say how they will react?  Smith, who is facing 2nd Degree Murder charges may very well be convicted but it should be based on the facts, not the bias media’s attempt to railroad him by casting a pair of criminals as saints and an old man defending his home as the devil.  The media wants to paint him as this monster but maybe he was just suffering from shock over what happened.

Trials are usually used to determine little things like guilt or innocence, at least they used to be.  Now the media basically reports who is innocent and who is guilty without so much as waiting for the jury.

I don’t know what was going through Smith’s mind that day when these criminals armed with a lead pipe entered his home.  I’ll bet you dollars to donuts though, that those two criminals would be alive today if they hadn’t broken into Smith’s house on Thanksgiving and tried to rob him. But I guess that bit of deductive reasoning isn’t as sexy as liberally biased sensationalism “journalism”.

All in all, as a gun owner remember this, if you ever find yourself needed to use your firearm to defend yourself, regardless of how justified, expect a high tech lynching from the media.

Yeah, I saw this too. The story I read over at Daily Mail Online is exactly this kind of piece. Popular students murdered by rough shod, angry man. Oh, and they happened to have broken into his house. Kids will be kids!

I’m pretty sure breaking into someone’s house is a well known offense legally and morally, and as several of us have gone onto say, robbery is risky business. Popularity and youth are not viable defenses for actions such as that. Legally this thing is a mess, and even if he doesn’t get hit with 2nd Degree murder (doesn’t look like there’s enough for second degree murder here in my estimations), I’m sure they’ll hit him with voluntary manslaughter, though.

Still, that would be the law, and that would be justice *as defined by our republic.* Not whatever horrendous whitewashing is about to occur.

You have GOT to be kidding me! Don’t get me wrong, it’s accurate that the media portrays gun owners as villains, but you are choosing THIS story to use as an example?? Shoot the robbers multiple times, put them out of their misery, wrap their bodies in tarps and leave them in the basement for a day or so . . . . I don’t care if he used a firearm, machete, or baseball bat as his chosen home protection device, he seems like a bit of a wackjob to me.

The ONLY leg he has to stand on was that he was in his own home and none of it would have happened had the criminals respected his rights.

Of course the other side of this coin is that if this happened at least once in every town in America, perhaps the crime rate would drop considerably?

Bill, i am in no way condoning his actions but i’m also not going to condemn him before a trial. The media on the other hand is doing just that. “These poor innocent popular school children” and so on. No, they were home invaders and they got shot by someone defending his home.

That the media portrays them as anything other than criminals who were shot in commission of their crime is the point I was getting across.

Maybe Smith is a cold hearted murdering bastard…or maybe he is a nice old man who lives alone and was overcome with shock by what he had done and acted peculiarly. Either way, it is for a jury to decide and they shouldn’t be biased before the fact by the media railroading a gun owner just because he didn’t want to get beaten to death with a lead pipe.

It doesn’t matter if he was confused or not. He killed the invaders, and, caring about the holidays, chose to hide them until after Thanksgiving. i’m sure all the cops would appreciate not having to deal with a shooting on Thanksgiving day! Fact is, they invaded his home, and if they had a “Lead pipe”, I’m sure the old man would be dead by now if he hadn’t acted. They got what they deserved. I hope he gets charged dropped on him, that’s what he deserves. I hope people stand with him in this incident.

Bill have you ever killed anyone? ever been sitting quietly in your home enjoying thanksgiving and have two younger, healthier people break into your home and be faced with the thought of do i kill them or let them kill me? It sounds strange but that is because you are safe in your home. You are comfortable and of your right mind so you THINK you can say “I would never do that” But in truth you have no clue what you would do.

That’s the problem with a case in California. My cousin’s high school friend, a retired veteran, stepped outside to tell a bunch of kids to cool it with the partying when beer cans started flying at his house. A group attacked him and his pregnant wife, so he shot two of them-one died. The media went ballistic in the area, portraying the deceased as this good kid; whose police record states differently, as he walked after being involved in the fatal stabbing of another teenager over a dispute of money, and he was underage drinking on probation for possession and sale of illegal weaponry. Not to mention every kid there was involved in a white supremacist gang.

The vet? He’s up for murder charges, the prosecution wants to hit him with premeditation because he is a CCP holder and was, shock, carrying his 1911 handgun at the time. He fired three rounds.

Now, even though there’s a movement in the area to get some coverage via other media sources and lobby groups to lean on this anti-gun group of legislators, they’re stalling his case for the foreseeable future, rather than let an innocent man free.

To make matters worse in regards to California’s justice system, several of the kids involved there were actually stupid enough to post to social networking sites a plan to murder this man in prison. Obviously, this was reported quickly, but no word yet has come out after several months as to whether these rotten apples are being punished for their crime, while a veteran sits in prison.

California, the land where soldiers die to defend the state’s right to unjustly prosecute them when they return home.

I have read several news stories about this incident, and I got to tell you… I can recognize media bias and yes, there may be some, but this guy seems like a wack-job if the reports I read are even 50% true. They were a lovely looking couple of teens, in the prime of life, happy etc. Yet what was going on to cause them (cousins) to break into the home of an elderly man to rob the home? Handsome and pretty doesn’t do it, yet the media portrays them as “good kids.”

But the other side is even more sinister. This man, in my opinion, unnecessarily shot two unarmed minors and “finished them off” when they were not a threat to his life or limb. If the story is as police have reported, he executed them, taking their lives according to reports of his own testimony. “Smith admitted to a “good clean finishing shot under her chin up into the cranium.” http://www.opposingviews.com/i/society/crime/video-byron-smith-kills-teen-intruders-fired-more-shots-i-needed. I think that Gunowners needs to be cautious in defending every gun owner who uses his gun to shoot a robber. It makes us all look bloodthirsty. Instead, we should call wrong as wrong, and report how important it is to be responsible in the use of our defensive weapons.

Once again Vintage, as I have tried to make clear, I nor Gun Owners are defending this man or his actions. Only that the media has and will try to crucify gun owners and make saints out of criminals before a trial has even taken place.

If Smith’s actions were sinister and nefarious beyond the shock the circumstance then by all means he should be punished for it. But that is not for the media to skew because of a couple of good looking kids decided to play burglars.

Not all of us live where cops are easy to come by. I live over an hour away from the fastest police response, and most people view the town I live in as backwards rednecks. The closest proper city is Moscow, which is chock full of Liberal Arts Majors who tell me exactly how much of a horrible person I am perpetuating the murder trade by owning a variety of firearms to protect myself and my family from predators out here, both the two and four legged variety.

More than a few people that come out here have referred to me as a whack-job behind my back while in the store grabbing a soda for the range, because I wear a Springfield Armory mil-spec 1911A1 in a Level 2 Serpa Blackhawk holster; and they’ve never even spoken to me or heard me speak. Don’t believe everything you read or hear about people until you’ve spoken to them.

I have to say Tony,. that I’m totally aware of media bias, and there is some in this case… but if the statements and actions attributed to the homeowner are true, using this as an example of media bias is about as logical as PETA standing up for Adolph Hitler because he was a vegetarian. Of course, knowing PETA (and I AM a vegetarian) I wouldn’t put it past them for an instant!

Sometimes, we choose tough examples, such as suggesting people read Robert Boatman’s “The Constitutional Right And Social Obligation To Carry A Gun” at http://www.ironwordranch.com/ . It’s brutal, honest, and fair. I don’t think the chosen article or defendant here meets those standards, but I do commend you for taking a chance, even if I disagree with your choice.

I appreciate that Mike. But as I stated in the comment section to some others, I am not condoning the mans action, only calling into question the media bias that is levied on any gun owner. Is Smith a nut job? Maybe, i don’t know. But how often do we hear things in the media that have been skewed or taken out of context.

My point is that instead of letting a jury decide the media has decided to impose itself on the discussion and dictate (or try to) whom is guilty and innocent. Maybe 64 yo Smith was in shock and wasn’t sure of his actions after the first shots, maybe he had a psychotic break, who knows. All we do know is that two adults (because seriously, 17 is old enough) broke into his house on the holiday with a lead pipe to rob him and he killed them. After that it is up to a jury to decide. I don’t think it is proper or right for the media to oft handidly villify Smith while beatifying the two home invaders. If Smith is a sociopath and the comments he has made in their entirety are consistent with that then he probably is heading to jail.

But if the media is once again jumping on a bandwagon to see who can railroad this guy first, much like they did during the Atlanta Olympics when they tried to destroy security guard Richard Jewell who was accused of planting the bomb while in truth he was a hero who was trying to save people.

I never believe anything I read in the Lamestream Media. If it’s not deliberately presenting everything so as to support their agenda any resemblance to what actually transpired is an accident and will not be allowed to re-occur. They are the agitptop arm of the DNC.

The number murdered by Communist regimes or organizations in the past hundred years stands at roughly 120 million. Just for the sake of this ideology, these people were removed from their homes, worked to death in concentration camps, exiled to perish on the Siberian steppes, subjected to the horrible tortures in the most horrible prisons, executed by brainwashed Communist militants, strangled, had their throats cut, or starved to death in deliberately-created famines.

It is never a good idea to speak to the police. I they tell you that they are on your side, remind them that if that is true, they know full well that you should talk to a lawyer first.

Yeah, I don’t know about this one. The guy shot the female (by his own admission) with a “finishing shot” to the head after the threat was mitigated. I’m a gun owner and NRA Personal Protection Instructor and can tell you that this is the wrong case to demonstrate your overall point. By trying to defend this guys actions (you say that is not what you are doing but it sure looks like it to the non believer) is not helping the cause.

I think this article and the comments are a good lesson to us in what to expect when we get into a confrontation. Don’t expect the media to treat you well if you get in this situation.
